: an infectious disease of cattle that is characterized by fever, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dehydration, excessive salivation, and ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract, that is caused by two flaviviruses of the genus Pestivirus (species Bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 and species Bovine viral diarrhea virus 2), and that tends to occur in herds with high morbidity but low mortality—called also bovine virus diarrhea, mucosal disease
